A LOVE OF LOCAL HISTORY, NATURE AND WALKING
The idea
Born from a desire to explore my local surroundings, this is a walking guide for those who believe the most profound adventures lie closer to home. Here, I explore the UK's often overlooked regions, from the castle-filled valleys of the Scottish Borders to the rugged uplands of Dumfries and Galloway, the expansive coastlines of Northumberland, and the shimmering lakes of Cumbria. I seek to uncover the histories and natural wonders that lie just beneath our feet. This work is a personal project, spun from the idea that by simply taking the time to look, we can uncover a world of wonder and discovery on the paths we thought we knew.
VALUES, MISSION AND PURPOSE
The aims
To Encourage Local Adventure: Inspire people to "explore at home" and see the UK's Borderlands as a prime destination for travel and discovery.
To Foster a Connection to Nature: By truly getting to know our local environment, we are more likely to care for and protect it.
To Shine a Light on Overlooked Places: Explore the little-known border regions between Scotland and England, highlighting the unique history and natural beauty that more popular tourist destinations overshadow.
I’ll start with my home in the Scottish Borders first.
To Uncover the Stories of the Landscape: Go beyond simple route guides to reveal the tales and histories that have shaped the land and its people.
To Build a Body of Work: Create a comprehensive collection of writing, illustrations and imagery for people of all ages to enjoy.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE BRAND
The curator
For 15 years, I honed my skills in the design industry, crafting for clients around the world. But while my work was creative, it kept me behind a screen and away from my other passions - the outdoors, history, and nature.
As an explorer at heart, I made the deliberate decision to work for myself to find the time and flexibility to pursue those passions. I realised that I could use my professional skills to create a larger, more involved project of my own.
Fables on Foot is the outcome. It is a single product that brings together all my interests, using my design skills to create compelling guides, my passion for history and nature to tell the land's stories, and my love for photography and illustration to document the routes.
By blending these passions, I hope to craft something both useful and inspiring - for everyone, young and old alike.
